Are you a black and white thinker?

Are you all or nothing? Good or bad? Right or wrong? A success or failure?

Black and white thinkers tend to see only one extreme or the other. There are no in-betweens, no shades of grey and no middle ground.

Applying this kind of thinking to eating and exercise is likely to leave you feeling negative, disappointed, frustrated or anxious. It is also likely to\n plunge you into helplessness and sabotage your health plans.

What do you do if you eat a couple more biscuits than you think you should? Do you see yourself as a failure and just eat the whole packet? Christmas advice

\n

How can you respond to black and white thinking? Do what you can, when you can throughout the Christmas period. Be active when possible, and prepare and\n organise healthy foods when you can. But enjoy those sleep-ins, the biscuits and that glass of wine, and be kind to yourself. You’ll probably enjoy\n Christmas more and you may even find that when you’re more realistic about what’s possible, you eat better and exercise more!

Merry Christmas and best wishes for a safe and healthy 2018.

Christmas Dieting...Black and White thinking.

by Ethos Health - 14 Dec 2017

Are you a black and white thinker?

Are you all or nothing? Good or bad? Right or wrong? A success or failure?

Black and white thinkers tend to see only one extreme or the other. There are no in-betweens, no shades of grey and no middle ground.

Applying this kind of thinking to eating and exercise is likely to leave you feeling negative, disappointed, frustrated or anxious. It is also likely to plunge you into helplessness and sabotage your health plans.

The mindset for Christmas eating.

What do you do if you eat a couple more biscuits than you think you should? Do you see yourself as a failure and just eat the whole packet? What if you don’t go for a walk and sleep in instead, do you then decide you may as well give up on exercising completely? What if you’ve had a couple of extra glasses of wine, do you throw up your hands and think you may as well give up entirely? These are examples of black and white thinking and how it can affect your resolve. It’s not the couple of biscuits or the glass of wine that’s the problem, it’s what unravels afterwards as a result of how you judge yourself.

It’s not possible to be perfect about eating or exercise. Life just doesn’t work that way. Plans change, things intervene and life, in all it’s glorious complexity, takes over.

Expect that over Christmas and New Year, or anytime for that matter, you can’t possibly do everything you think you should. It may be liberating to know that it’s unlikely to be just one thing, or even a few things that will bring your health plan unstuck. It’s what happens regularly, not randomly, that determines your weight and level of fitness.
